Today's Verse:Deuteronomy 28:2 (ESV)
And all these blessings shall come upon you and sovertake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.
s ver. 15; Zech. 1:6
In the Book of Deuteronomy, God spells out the blessing and curses for obedience and disobedience by His chosen people. God waited for a whole generation of Israelites to pass away before He allowed His people to claim the Promised Land. Why? Because He knew that their apostasy and disobedience would follow them into the land, if He allowed them to cross the Jordan River.
Today's Comments: The prosperity gospellers love this passage, because it supports one of their claims that with obedience comes financial blessing. And yet, that did not happen to those who followed Christ in the beginning. We know from history that many of the disciples and apostles died at the hands of the Romans. The prosperity that God promises to His chosen people is that of participating in His Kingdom for eternity. That is the one and only promise that we should rely upon. Everything else that we have comes from God, and He has his reasons for the things that He gives to us. Our job is to keep our faith through His grace, trust in His ability to rule our lives, worship Him, and love our neighbors.
