Today's Verse: Matthew 9:36 (ESV)
oWhen he saw the crowds, phe had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, qlike sheep without a shepherd.
o [ch. 14:14]
p Mark 6:34
q Num. 27:17; 1 Kgs. 22:17; Ezek. 34:5
The description in this passage illustrates the servant leadership by which Jesus performed His ministry. Though He was the Lord their God, like a servant, He ministered to them out of His compassion.
Today's Comments: Reading this passage makes me think of one of the sections in the Messiah in which Isaiah is paraphrased, "All we like sheep who have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way. And the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all." It is the compassion of our God that brings us the hope that we can follow Jesus despite all of our shortcomings. We were lost, but now we are found, and the Good Shepherd will lead us to green pastures.
